3D scanning app Kiri Engine 3.9 now auto-rigs your 3D models
Kiri Innovations has updated Kiri Engine, its 3D scanning app for Android and iOS.
The 3.9 update “reimagines what a 3D scanner app can do”, automatically rigging the models it generates for animation.
The release also improves Kiri Engine’s AI-based Featureless Object Scan mode and increases the number of source photos that can be use for photogrammetry.
A free AI-enhanced 3D scanning app for Android as well as Apple phones
First released in 2022, Kiri Engine is a 3D scanning app for Android and iOS devices.
It began as a photogrammetry tool, reconstructing 3D models from source photos of real-world objects, and uses AI techniques for object masking and noise removal.
Recent updates have added support for Neural Surface Reconstruction, 3D Gaussian Splatting and Lidar scanning on iOS devices.
Now automatically rigs the 3D models it creates
The main new feature in Kiri Engine 3.9 is Auto-Rig Generation, the AI rigging system.
It automatically generates simple animation rigs for the 3D models it generates, both for characters and creatures – for example, scans of toys – and inanimate objects.
The video at the top of the story shows rigs for some unusual objects, including a carton of rust remover and a croissant.
Rigs are stored as a separate FBX file with the same orientation as the original model.
The functionality is part of Kiri Engine’s advanced export options, which are only available to users with paid Pro accounts, not free Basic accounts.
Updates to Neural Surface Reconstruction and photogrammetry
Users with paid accounts also get an update to Featureless Object Mode, Kiri Engine’s AI-based mode for scanning reflective surfaces, particularly transparent ones.
The changes to the Neural Surface Reconstruction (NSR) algorithm “significantly [decrease] the input requirement threshold while increasing the details of the output”.
The number of source photos that can be used to generate photogrammetry scans has also been increased, to 100 for free accounts and 300 for paid accounts.
Pricing and system requirements
Kiri Engine 3.9 is available for Android 7.0 and iOS/iPadOS 15.0.
The app itself is free to download. Free Basic accounts include photogrammetry, Lidar scanning and Object Capture, and can export three 3D scans from the cloud per week.
Pro accounts cost $17.99/month or $79.99/year, up $3/month or $20/year, and make it possible to export an unlimited number of scans, and unlock advanced features.
