3D scanning tools developer Kiri Innovations has released a free Gaussian Splatting Plugin for After Effects, making it possible to use 3DGS scans inside After Effects compositions.
The open-source tool includes basic options for manipulating Gaussian Splats inside the compositing software, including cropping them, recoloring them, and applying noise.
A new technique for generating 3D scans from images of real-world objects
3D Gaussian Splatting provides a new way to reconstruct real-world objects from source images or video, creating high-quality, fast-rendering 3D representations.
An increasing number of applications can now generate 3DGS data, one obvious example being Kiri Innovations’ own 3D scanning app, Kiri Engine.
Import 3D Gaussian Splats into After Effects for use in compositing and motion graphics
Kiri Innovations already develops a free plugin for manipulating Gaussian Splats in Blender, to which the new tool is an After Effects counterpart.
It makes it possible to import 3DGS scans in .ply format, add them to a composition, and view them with native After Effects 3D cameras, with support for depth of field.
There are fewer options to manipulate splats than the Blender add-on, but you can crop them, recolor them with gradients, or apply noise and displacement to create motion graphics effects.
The tool provides an alternative to commercial add-ons like this one from Irrealix.
Pricing and system requirements
Kiri Innovations’ Gaussian Splatting plugin for After Effects is compatible with After Effects on Windows and macOS. It’s a free download. The source code is available under an MIT license.
