SuperSplat Editor 3.0 is a huge performance update
PlayCanvas has released SuperSplat Editor 3.0, a major performance update to its free and open-source browser-based tool for visualizing and editing 3D Gaussian Splats.
The editor has been rebuilt fully on WebGPU, making it possible to load much larger scenes, while a new Stochastic Alpha render mode keeps very heavy scenes responsive.
View and edit 3DGS data for free in a standard web browser
First released in 2024, the SuperSplat Editor makes it possible to import and edit 3D scans captured as 3D Gaussian Splats (3DGS) in a standard web browser.
Users can import data in PLY or other standard formats, and hide, remove or re-orient individual splats, or edit out larger parts of the scan using volume selection tools.
It is also possible to color grade splats and to set up camera flythroughs.
Edited splats can be rendered as still images or video, published to PlayCanvas’s online gallery, or exported in formats including SPZ or SOG, PlayCanvas’s own compressed format.
SuperSplat Editor 3.0: now rebuilt on WebGPU to manipulate larger splats interactively
The latest update rebuilds the entire SuperSplat Editor on WebGPU, PlayCanvas having rolled out a WebGPU renderer earlier this year.
It provides a significant decrease in the memory needed to load and edit scenes, in turn making it possible to load much larger scenes, and have them remain responsive in the editor.
The saving varies according to what you’re doing with a splat, but if the figures given in PlayCanvas’s blog post for a 4.4 million splat scene are typical, scenes use over 10x less memory when idle, or when rendering, although the reduction is smaller when saving.
For very heavy scenes – tens of millions of Gaussians – a new Stochastic Alpha render mode, which avoids the need to sort Gaussians before rendering them, can be set to kick in whenever frame-calculation times go too high, helping to keep the scene responsive when navigating it.
New options for selecting and color grading splats
Other major changes include the new Sphere brush (shown above), which makes it possible to select parts of a splat by painting directly onto surfaces in 3D, making it easier to select only the object required, rather than the Gaussians behind it.
It is also now possible to color grade individual selections, not just the entire scene.

Licensing and system requirements
SuperSplat 3.0 is browser-based, and can be used for free online. It runs in Chrome, Edge, Safari 26+ and Firefox where WebGPU is enabled.
The source code is available under an open-source MIT license.
