CLO Virtual Fashion releases Marvelous Designer 12.2

CLO Virtual Fashion has released Marvelous Designer 12.2, the latest version of the digital clothing design software.

The update adds a new automatic UV packing system, extends USD support, and makes it possible to import or export multiple 3D characters to use as avatars in a single FBX file.

Convert 2D patterns into animated 3D clothing
Widely used by games and animation studios, Marvelous Designer enables artists to design 3D garments in the same way as real-world clothes, by stitching virtual 2D pattern parts together.

Users can import an animated character model, drape clothing over it, then export the result in Alembic or FBX format, as an OBJ file sequence, or as a Maya cache, PC2 or MDD cache.

As well as simulating the effect of gravity on a garment, it is possible to create wind animations.

Marvelous Designer 12.2: automatic UV packing
Marvelous Designer already has a UV Editor, where UVs for the garment being created are displayed, but Marvelous Designer 12.2 adds the option to pack the UV islands automatically.

Users can choose whether to preserve the rotation and relative scale for the islands, and to pack islands for different garments to separate UV tiles, as shown in the video above.

In addition, Unified UV Coordinates are now supported when exporting USD files, support for Universal Scene Description having been added in Marvelous Designer 12.1.

Other new features
Other changes include the option to import or export multiple 3D avatars in a single FBX file.

There is also a new Roll Up feature for folding over the ends of sleeves or trouser cuffs, and the option to double-click to select all 2D pattern pieces connected by sewing relationships.

Pricing and availability
Marvelous Designer 12.2 is available for Windows 10+ and macOS 10.15+. It is rental-only.

Personal subscriptions cost $39/month or $280/year. Enterprise subscriptions cost $1,700/year for a node-locked licence, and $2,000/year to $2,500/year for floating licences.
