Tutorial: Creating a Sci-Fi Sequence using Houdini Solaris

The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating a Sci-Fi Sequence using Houdini Solaris, a guide to the Solaris toolset recorded by Ghost VFX Lead Lighting Artist Andreas Kjær-Jensen.

The workshop provides over six hours of video training in Houdini and Nuke, and is aimed at lighting artists and generalists getting started with Solaris.

A comprehensive guide to Solaris and USD-based workflows for VFX and cinematics
In the workshop, Kjær-Jensen sets out the complete process of creating a production-quality VFX sequence using Solaris, Houdini’s USD-based lighting, lookdev and shot layout toolset.

He begins by providing an introduction to Solaris and USD as a whole, then uses the same workflows to develop a full sequence, covering shading, layout, and cinematic lighting.

The finished sequence is rendered using Houdini’s Karma renderer, and composited using Nuke.

As well as the tutorial videos, viewers of the workshop can download project files including base assets, renders and textures.

The workshop uses KitBash3D’s commercial Future Warfare and Spaceships: Legacy asset packs, and Action VFX’s Aerial Explosions stock footage collection.
