Rigging Supervisor and animation tools developer Gregor Weiss has released a free bear rig, created with BEAR, his Maya character rig builder.
The asset, which is provided in Maya’s MB format, includes both a full-body and facial rig, and can be used as a reference setup for BEAR, or as a standalone asset.
A free creature rig developed using the BEAR rigging toolset for Maya
The free creature rig was developed using BEAR, Weiss’s rig building framework for Maya.
It includes components for creating full-body and facial rigs for characters and creatures, for use in visual effects, animation or game development.
According to the product website, it is possible to build a “full-featured biped rig and guide” in “less than 15 seconds”.
BEAR uses only native Maya features, so the rigs it creates can be used in vanilla installations of Maya, without the add-on installed.
The Core version is free for non-commercial use, and includes all of the biped, quadruped and facial rig components.
The Full version includes additional hair, muscle and surface components, plus advanced features like eyelid sealing, automated guide snapping, and a corrective blendshape workflow.
Development of the toolset was informed by Weiss’s own production experience at animation, VFX and game development studios, including as Rigging Supervisor at Arx anima.
Licensing and system requirements
Gregor Weiss’s bear rig is provided in MB format for use in Maya. It’s a free download.
The Core edition of BEAR itself is free for non-commercial use, or $19 for commercial projects. Perpetual licenses of the Full edition, which adds advanced rigging features, cost $49.
