Free tutorial: Lighting Realistic Rainy Weather in Unreal Engine 5

The Gnomon Workshop has released Lighting Realistic Rainy Weather in Unreal Engine 5, a free guide to professional game art workflows, recorded by Lightspeed LA artist Ted Mebratu.

The intermediate-to-advanced workshop provides 30 minutes of video training in Unreal Engine.

Create quick, art-directable weather effects in Unreal Engine
In the workshop, Mebratu sets out his complete workflow for quickly creating an atmospheric rainy lighting scenario in Unreal Engine using the Ultra Dynamic Sky add-on.

He begins by setting cloud coverage and fog density, and balancing the Sky Light against the Directional Light, before dialling in the exposure and color in a Post Process Volume.

Mebratu then sets up lighting for a foreground character, giving the figure visual definition by using Rect and Point Lights for fill lighting.

The workshop also covers techniques that help to sell the weather effects visually, including using splines for rain drips and puddle volumes for standing water.

In the final lesson, Mebratu reveals the settings he uses to export a sharp 8K 16-bit EXR render from the Movie Render Queue.

About the artist
Ted Mebratu is a Senior Lighting Artist at Lightspeed LA. He previously worked at Naughty Dog on The Last of Us Part I remake, and at Ready at Dawn on Lone Echo II and Echo VR.
