Free tutorial: Design Mechs in VR Using Substance 3D Modeler

The Gnomon Workshop has released Design Mechs in VR Using Substance 3D Modeler, a free guide to VR sculpting workflow, recorded by WB Games concept artist Andre-Lang Huynh.

The workshop provides 30 minutes of video training in Substance 3D Modeler and KeyShot.

Master VR sculpting workflows for concept art and hard-surface design
In the workshop, Huynh demonstrates his complete workflow for designing and sculpting a mech from scratch using Adobe’s virtual reality sculpting software Substance 3D Modeler.

Beginning with simple geometric forms, he sets out how to establish clear proportions and silhouettes, before building complexity through secondary and tertiary forms – like articulation and armor plating – and through color and surface detail.

Core Substance 3D Modeler features covered include primitive shapes, sculpting brushes, Booleans, layers, materials, stamps, symmetry, angle snapping, and reusable kitbash elements.

Once the sculpt is complete, Huynh exports it to KeyShot, where he demonstrates how to assign materials, build a simple lighting setup, and produce polished presentation renders.

Project files available with the workshop include the completed Substance 3D Modeler scene.

About the artist
Andre-Lang Huynh is an Advanced Concept Artist at WB Games Montréal, where he designed characters, props and vehicles for Gotham Knights, including the Batmobile and Batcycle.

Price and availability
Design Mechs in VR Using Substance 3D Modeler is available via a subscription to The Gnomon Workshop, which provides access to over 300 tutorials.

Subscriptions cost $57/month or $499/year. Free trials are available.
