Rig and animate 3D characters for free with AccuRig 2.0

Reallusion has launched AccuRig 2.0, the new version of its free auto-rigging tool.

The software generates full-body and finger rigs for 3D characters and exports them in FBX and USD format for use in DCC apps and game engines like Blender, Cinema 4D and Unreal Engine.

Version 2.0 makes it possible to browse stock animations from Reallusion’s ActorCore library inside AccuRig, retarget them to a 3D character, and export the resulting animation.

An alternative to Adobe’s free Mixamo auto-rigger
AccuRig – strictly, it’s stylized ‘AccuRIG’ – is Reallusion’s counterpart to the automatic character rigger available with Mixamo, Adobe’s free online library of motion clips.

The software is designed for use with ActorCore, Reallusion’s own online library of 3D characters and motions, but can be used independently of it.

It imports characters in OBJ and FBX format, generates a 19-joint body rig and a separate finger rig, and exports the rigged character in iAvatar format for use in Reallusion’s iClone animation software, or in FBX or USD format, for use in other DCC applications and game engines.

There are export presets for 3ds Max, Blender, Cinema 4D, Maya, MotionBuilder, Omniverse, Unity and Unreal Engine. You can read more about how AccuRig works in this story.

New in AccuRig 2.0: browse and apply stock animations from the ActorCore library
AccuRig 2.0 adds a new Add Motions tab inside the software from which users can browse stock animations in the online ActorCore library, and preview them on a rigged 3D character.

It is then possible to export the retargeted animation alongside the rigged character, in the same file formats and using the same application-specific presets as the character itself.

Add Motions uses the same Smart Search functionality that Reallusion has just added to iClone, so it supports natural language searches in a range of languages.

It is also possible to search for animations similar in “style or theme” to the one selected.

Mainly for paid-for resources, but there are a few free animations
At the time of writing, 32 of the animations on ActorCore are available for free, although the vast majority – there are currently over 4,500 available – are commercial resources.

You can add motions to an online shopping cart from within AccuRig, although you need to switch to a web browser to complete the payment.

We’ve contacted Reallusion to check whether you can use AccuRig 2.0 to retarget animations from other sources to your 3D characters, and will update if we hear back.

Pricing and system requirements
AccuRig 2.0 is available for Windows 8+. It’s a free download. To export a rigged 3D character, you will need to register for a free ActorCore account, even if you are only exporting locally.
