NVIDIA launches 72GB RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell GPU

NVIDIA has launched a new 72GB edition of its Blackwell series RTX 5000 PRO GPU.

The new card, which otherwise has identical specs to the existing 48GB edition, is targeted at “memory-hungry workflows” in computer graphics, AI development and data science.

Below, we’ve rounded up its key specs for DCC work, its street price at launch, and what we know about its likely performance in CG software.

Key specs for CG work
With the exception of the additional GPU memory, all of the published specifications for the RTX PRO 5000 72GB are identical to the existing 48GB edition, which was released earlier this year.

How will the RTX PRO Blackwell GPUs perform with CG software?
Given the two editions have otherwise identical specs, we would expect the new RTX PRO 5000 72GB to perform similarly to the 48GB edition for tasks that fit into GPU memory.

However, for memory-intensive tasks like rendering or simulation, the 50% increase in on-board memory capacity significantly increases the size of projects that can be processed on the GPU.

Exceeding GPU memory capacity usually results in a huge increase in render or simulation time: something illustrated clearly in our recent review of current-gen NVIDIA consumer GPUs.

NVIDIA’s own blog post announcing the new 72GB edition focuses heavily on generative AI, so it doesn’t include detailed benchmark results for CG software.

The text does mention that the RTX PRO 5000 72GB reduces render times in apps like Arnold, Blender, D5 Render, Redshift and V-Ray by “up to 4.7x”, but it isn’t clear how that figure was arrived at, or to which previous-gen NVIDIA GPU the RTX PRO 5000 72GB is being compared to.

Expected street price
NVIDIA hasn’t announced a recommended price for the 72GB card, which is available through its manufacturing and distribution partners.

However, IT infastructure firm SHI lists the MSRP as $9,999, which fits with the street prices we can find, such as UK reseller Scan, which currently lists the card at £6,899.99 (around $9,310).

If Scan is representative of other distributors, that puts the street price of the RTX PRO 5000 72GB much closer to that of the higher-end 96GB RTX PRO 6000 than the original 48GB edition.

Release date
The RTX PRO 5000 72GB GPU is available now via distribution partners including Ingram Micro, Leadtek, Unisplendour and xFusion.
