JangaFX unveils GeoGen
Orignally posted on 10 May 2022. Scroll down for updates, including the change of name to GeoGen.
JangaFX has unveiled SceneryGen, its upcoming terrain generation tool.
The software, which was initially developed as a “cooldown project” between bursts of work on real-time simulation tools EmberGen and LiquiGen, is pitched as a quick way to generate heightmaps or 3D terrain.
The Substance 3D Designer of real-time terrain generation?
Unveiled during yesterday’s company livestream, the recording of which is embedded above, SceneryGen is a real-time tool for generating planetary-scale terrain.
JangaFX describes it as a successor to Grand Designer, the ‘procedural universe generator’ developed by Gil Damoiseaux, now working as a technical advisor to the company.
It features an EmberGen-like interface and workflow, with users able to generate terrain using a combination of a node graph, and slider and curve controls.
JangaFX describes it as being “built like Substance [3D] Designer, but for terrain and planets”.
The software is pitched as a simple, streamlined tool to generate heightmaps and 3D terrain for real-time applications like games, and won’t be as fully featured as tools like World Creator or Terragen.
However, it already includes a couple of more advanced features: the initial demo shows both animated water and environment fog, opening up the possibility of generating pretty nice-looking renders.

Updated 8 December 2022: JangaFX has now renamed SceneryGen – always just a working title for the software – to GeoGen, and announced that the beta release is “coming in 2023”.
Its website describes GeoGen as a “fresh take on what terrain and planet generation can be… with modern node-based workflows, unique simulations, and workflow enhancements built with games in mind”.
Pricing, system requirements and release date
GeoGen is due in beta in 2023. JangaFX hasn’t announced pricing or system requirements yet.
EmberGen is officially still in beta: the current release, EmberGen 0.7.5.5, is available for Windows 10 only.
Indie subscriptions, for artists with revenue under $1 million/year, cost $19.99/month or $199.99/year, with users qualifying for a perpetual licence after 12 months. See more pricing options here.
