Unity modeling, texturing and rigging tool UModeler X is now free
UModeler has made UModeler X, its popular 3D modeling, texturing and rigging add-on for Unity available free.
The tool, used by a range of indie game developers and games art studios, was previously subscription-only, and used to cost over $100/year for individual artists.
A well-regarded alternative to ProBuilder for 3D modeling inside the Unity Editor
UModeler X makes it possible to create low-poly models, UV unwrap them, paint textures, and – in the case of 3D characters – rig and skin them directly inside the Unity Editor.
The add-on, often regarded as a more user-friendly alternative to Unity’s native ProBuilder package, was shortlisted for a Unity Award in 2024.
It has been used commercially on a number of indie games: you can can see testimonials on the UModeler website.
Base edition now free as UModeler launches new generative AI service Picoberry AI
UModeler has now made the base edition of UModeler X a free download: UModeler X Plus, which includes access to readymade asset kits, is still sold commercially.
As is the way of things, the company has now launched a generative AI service for creating 3D game assets, Picoberry AI, which seems to be its new main revenue stream.
UModeler is promoting UModeler X as a way to edit the content it generates, although it can still be used as a standalone tool.
Price and system requirements
Umodeler X 1.2 is compatible with Unity 2022.3+. It’s free.
