In the workshop, Silva reveals how to construct a cinematic in-game visual effect in Unreal Engine: an energy dome that reacts visually to external impacts.
The Unreal Engine training covers how to create a multi-stage Dome Material, how to master Render Target setup, and Blueprint logic for the projectiles and explosions.
Silva also demonstrates how to use EmberGen to create effects flipbooks that can be integrated with Niagara particle systems inside Unreal Engine for weapon/shield interactions.
Another video covers creating optimized, VFX-tileable textures in Substance 3D Designer.
Silva also shares his insights into R&D, pipeline optimization, and prioritizing visual impact within the technical constraints of a modern game engine.
As well as the tutorial videos, viewers of the workshop can download project files including textures, brushes and the mesh used for the energy dome.
About the artist
Fabio Silva is a VFX Director and Technical Artist. He served as the VFX Director at Striking Distance Studios, where he oversaw the effects for survival horror game The Callisto Protocol.
He previously worked at Naughty Dog, on Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and The Last of Us 2, at Crytek on Ryse: Son of Rome, and at Blizzard Entertainment and Epic Games.
