Adobe releases Substance 3D Painter 10.1

Adobe has released Substance 3D Painter 10.1. The new version of the 3D texture painting software adds an Embroidery decal material for generating sewn patches from source images.

The release also adds eight new filters, extends USD support, and updates the software to the 2024 VFX Reference Platform spec.

New Embroidery decal material and eight new filters
New features in Substance 3D Painter 10.1 include the Embroidery decal material.

It works like the Embroidery filter in Substance 3D Sampler, taking text or an image as a source, and using it to generate an embroidered patch that can be placed on the surface of a model.

There are also eight new filters, including Fill Area Color/Mask filters, which can be used to fill closed paths – including 3D paths – with solid colors or color gradients.

New utility filters include a FXAA anti-aliasing filter, and highpass, pixelate, posterize, threshold and smoothstep filters, the latter for converting linear grayscale gradients to smooth curves.

Workflow and performance improvements
UI changes include redesigned icons for filters, with their color showing whether they are intended to be used only on the content of a layer, or on both the content and the layer mask.

Performance improvements include reduced opening times for complex projects, and automatic optimization when tessellation is enabled in shader settings.

Extended USD support and support for VFX Reference Platform 2024
Pipeline changes include support for textures when importing USD files; and Adobe Standard Material properties are now included when exporting textures from Painter to a USD file.

The update also moves Substance 3D Painter to the current CY2024 spec for VFX Reference Platform: the switch from Qt5 to Qt6 mean that Python plugins may need to be updated.

Price and system requirements
Substance 3D Painter 10.1 is available for Windows 10+, RHEL 8.6/9.2+ and Ubuntu 20.04+ Linux and macOS 12.0+.

Perpetual licences are available via Steam and cost $199.99.

The software is also available via Adobe’s Substance 3D subscriptions.

Substance 3D Texturing subscriptions cost $19.99/month or $219.88/year; Substance 3D Collection subscriptions cost $49.99/month or $549.88/year.

Subscriptions to the Linux edition require a Creative Cloud Plan for Teams.
