Maxon to raise subscription prices in September 2024
Orignally posted on 5 August 2024, and updated with information from Maxon.
Maxon users are sharing an image showing upcoming price rises to the firm’s products, including Cinema 4D and ZBrush, apparently from an email to subscribers.
The image, which has been posted on Reddit and the Core 4D forum, shows increases in the price of product subscriptions scheduled for 1 September 2024.
Maxon has confirmed to CG Channel that the prices shown in the image are accurate.
Online users have shared the image above, showing changes in pricing to Maxon’s software scheduled for 1 September 2024.
Increases in subscription pricing for Redshift, ZBrush and Cinema 4D
The image shows a range of changes to subscription prices, largely increases.
The smallest changes are for the Redshift renderer, which can also be used with non-Maxon software like Maya, 3ds Max and Houdini. The cost of a monthly Redshift subscription rises 2.2%, while annual subscriptions are unchanged.
The largest rise is to a monthly ZBrush subscription, up 25.6% to $49/month, although the increase in the price of an annual subscription is lower, at 11.1%.
According to the image, ZBrush subscriptions will now include ZBrush for iPad, the upcoming iOS version of the digital sculpting software.
The prices shown for Cinema 4D, Maxon’s 3D animation and motion graphics software, represent a rise of 16.0% for monthly subscriptions, and 16.7% for annual subscriptions.
However, the prices listed for current subscriptions are for Cinema 4D alone, while the new prices are for subscriptions for Cinema 4D and Redshift.
For users already subscribing to both Cinema 4D and Redshift, the new price actually represents a decrease of 6%.
We’ve asked Maxon whether it will still be possible to subscribe to Cinema 4D alone once the changes come into force, but have not yet heard back.
Updated 15 August 2024: Maxon has confirmed that Cinema 4D will no longer be sold as a standalone subscription from September, and will only be available bundled with Redshift.
The first change to Cinema 4D subscription pricing for five years
The changes are the first increase in the cost of Maxon subscriptions for years.
The price of Cinema 4D subscriptions have not changed since they were introduced in 2019, and ZBrush subscription pricing has not changed for at least as long.
For comparison, there has been a cumulative 25% increase in the price of other goods since January 2019, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics’ online calculator.
When we contacted Maxon for a comment on the changes, it responded: “We are constantly reviewing and adjusting our offers based on customer feedback and behaviors.”
The only way to access new versions of most Maxon software
Subscriptions are the only way to access new versions of most of Maxon’s software, the firm having gradually discontinued perpetual licenses over the past three years.
Perpetual licenses of Redshift and the Red Giant tools were discontinued in 2021, with Cinema 4D and ZBrush following suit last year.
Updated EULA comes into force on 1 September 2024
In separate news, Maxon has announced upcoming changes to its software End User License Agreement.
The update, which also comes into force on 1 September 2024, extends the EULA to include ZBrush on the iPad.
The number of times that users can switch software licenses between different devices is also now capped, at “five license releases per day”.
