Epic Games releases RealityScan 1.4

Epic Games has released RealityScan 1.4, the latest version of its free photogrammetry app for iPhones, iPads and Android devices.

The update streamlines workflow for cropping out unwanted parts of scans, and improves the quality of the meshes and UV layouts generated.

Other recent updates have added support for batch processing and an Auto-Capture mode.

Free app makes photogrammetry available to anyone with a smartphone
RealityScan is intended to make the 3D scanning capabilities of tools like RealityCapture, the photogrammetry software that Epic acquired in 2021, accessible to hobbyists as well as pros.

The app turns photos of real-world objects captured using the camera in a mobile phone or tablet into textured 3D models for use in AR, game development or general 3D work.

Data is processed in the cloud, from where the resulting 3D model can be exported to Sketchfab, Epic’s model-sharing platform, and downloaded in FBX format for use in other DCC applications and game engines.

Files uploaded to Sketchfab are automatically transcoded into glTF and USDZ formats, supported in apps including 3ds Max, Blender, Cinema 4D, Maya, Unity and Unreal Engine.

RealityScan 1.4: improvements to cropping workflow and mesh quality
RealityScan 1.4 streamlines the process of cropping out unwanted parts of a raw scan, making it possible to drag the boundaries of the crop in fixed 2D views, as well as in 3D.

The update also improves the quality of the UV maps and meshes generated, with “artifacts like floating triangles and small mesh fragments” now automatically filtered out during processing.

Workflow improvements include the option to assign categories and tags to scans before exporting them to Sketchfab.

More new features from RealityScan 1.2 and RealityScan 1.3
Since we last wrote about the app, Epic Games has also added a new Auto-Capture mode, which automatically takes photos as the user moves around the object being scanned.

Users can also now batch-process projects, capturing images for several scans while offline, then uploading them to the cloud in one go.

System requirements and availability
RealityScan is compatible with Android phones and tablets that support ARCore, running Android 7.0+, and with iPhones and iPads running iOS 16.0+ and iPadOS 16.0+. It’s free.

Basic Sketchfab accounts are free. You can find pricing for paid Sketchfab accounts here.
