Tutorial: Creating a Monolithic City in Unreal Engine 5


The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating a Monolithic City in Unreal Engine 5, a detailed guide to current environment workflows, recorded by DNEG environment artist Jianfeng (Allan) Li.

The workshop provides over nine hours of video training in Unreal Engine and other key tools, including Maya, Houdini, Gaea, SpeedTree, Substance 3D Painter, ZBrush, Photoshop and Nuke.

It is aimed at intermediate-to-advanced-level artists, with some experience of the tools used.

Create a large-scale city environment for VFX or game cinematics in Unreal Engine 5
In the workshop, Li sets out the process of creating a large-scale environment in Unreal Engine suitable for use in visual effects, animation, motion graphics or games cinematics.

Topics covered include gathering references and creating concept sketches, asset development, scene assembly, basic matte-painting techniques, and rendering and compositing a final cinematic animation.

The workshop also uses free plugins and assets, including content from Poly Haven and Mixamo, plus SideFX’s Greeble Generator and Psyop’s Cryptomatte ID matte generation system.

About the artist
Jianfeng (Allan) Li is a senior environment generalist at international VFX firm DNEG.

He has worked in the industry for eight years, with movie credits including the Dune series, Thor: Love and Thunder, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Black Panther and Wonder Woman.
