The Digital Human League, a Chaos Group Labs-organised collective of researchers and technologists, has released Digital Emily 2, a free, hi-res 3D scan of a female human head, as part of its Wikihuman Project.

A free, publicly available update to an era-defining research project
A kind of sequel to The Digital Emily Project, the University of Southern California and Image Metrics’ 2008 work on creating photorealistic digital actors, Digital Emily 2 is also based on actress Emily O’Brien.

The new version increases the resolution of the 3D scan, and raises the size of the texture maps – which include difuse, specular, subsurface scatter, displacement and micro-displacement – to 8K x 8K.

The model is provided in Alembic format with an accompanying OSL shader, or as a Maya scene file with shaders already set up. The latter requires Maya 2015 and above and V-Ray 3.0 for Maya and above.

In addition, the Digital Human League has released four sets of reference images used to create the assets in EXR format. All of the downloads are free, but the assets are only licensed for non-commercial use.
