Rodeo FX has posted a spectacular breakdown of its VFX work for Season 3 of Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon.

The studio delivered 394 VFX shots for the series, with environment work including set extensions for Kings Landing, and more extensive CG work for the market town of Tumbleton.

But the core of the work was, not surprisingly, the CG dragons – six of them in total, including the massive, majestic Silverwing, who Rodeo FX first designed and animated for Season 2.

This time, her destructive power is on full display in the climactic Battle of Tumbleton, with Silverwing raining fire down upon the armies of the seven kingdoms.

The sequence spans hundreds of shots, roughly 100 of them involving crowd work, layered with dragon fire and large-scale destruction simulations.

The main breakdown video shows the full range of effects that Rodeo FX worked on, but the studio has also shared a second breakdown on LinkedIn focusing on Silverwing.

It takes a shot from practical photography to final effects, showing the CG environment and creature, plate integration of Silverwing’s rider, and lighting, atmospherics, and fire simulation.
