Check out Roxel Creative’s eerie VFX breakdown for Backrooms

Roxel Creative founder Calvin Romeyn has shared a brilliantly eerie VFX breakdown of the studio’s work on Backrooms, Kane Parsons’ psychological horror movie.

It deconstructs the environment of the Backrooms itself: a kind of fluorescent-lit architectural hell, full of spaces that are both claustrophobic and seemingly endless.

The highlight is undoubtedly the aptly named Vertigo Room, created as a full CG environment, but the video also shows some of the CG extensions to the production’s labyrinthine practical sets.

Other parts show exterior sequences from the movie that you may not have thought were CG, plus some of the previs and stuntvis work.

Backrooms was the first major project for Roxel Creative, which Romeyn – a former Lead Compositor at ILM – founded after leaving his previous start-up, Niche VFX.

Romeyn also served as Associate VFX Supervisor on the entire movie.
