Check out promising new Blender retopology tool Smart Remesh
3D artist Milad Kambari has released Smart Remesh, a promising Blender retopology add-on for a range of users, from games artists, to hard-surface modelers, to character artists.
The tool, which has separate modes for organic and hard-surface models, promises a context-aware approach to retopology, turning messy source meshes into clean, quad-based geometry.
Kambari pitches it as suitable for problem cases like “imported CAD, 3D scans, dirty Boolean results, [and] bought models with bad topology”.
But don’t Blender users have a lot of other retopology tools already?
Blender users looking to retopologize models already have a lot of options, including the native tools, other add-ons, and standalone retopology software, some of it free.
However, Kambari – who heads up game outsourcing firm 3DRedBox – has a track record as an asset creator and educator, and Smart Remesh itself is getting good early reviews.
So how does Smart Remesh differ from existing tools?
Kabmari’s pitch for Smart Remesh is that it takes account of the form of the asset being retopologized.
Most fundamentally, there are separate modes for hard-surface and organic models, the latter based on veteran open-source retopology tool Instant Meshes.
Hard-surface mode is perhaps more interesting, and “finds the model’s real edges, rebuilds each flat panel as a single n-gon, and drops the edge loops that carry no shape”.
“It does not move the surface — every vertex of the result is a vertex the model already had, so the silhouette, the fillets and the panel edges come out exactly where they were.”
There are three presets – for general work, for when fine detail needs to be preserved, and for models with a lot of flat panels – but you can also adjust the target geometry density manually.
You can see examples of remeshed models in the plugin’s listing on Superhive, some of them taking hard-surface assets to very low poly counts for games or AR work.
Already up to Smart Remesh 2
Smart Remesh is also evolving rapidly: although it was first released six days ago, it has already reached version 2.02.
New features in Smart Rememsh 2 include better UV layout preservation: multi-tile UV layouts like UDIMs should now stay in position on an asset after remeshing.
It is also now possible to bake details from the original high-resolution mesh when using Organic mode.
Price and system requirements
Smart Remesh is compatible with Blender 4.2+ on Windows, Linux and macOS. It costs $15.
