CLO Virtual Fashion releases Marvelous Designer 2026.1

CLO Virtual Fashion has released Marvelous Designer 2026.0, the latest version of the 3D clothing design software for game development, animation and visual effects.

The update adds new tools for painting folds and wrinkles into fabric, ripping garments apart along their seams, and for creating blendshape-based animations for 3D avatars.

Convert 2D patterns into animated 3D clothing
Widely used by games and animation studios, Marvelous Designer lets artists design 3D garments in the same way as real-world clothes, by stitching virtual 2D pattern parts.

Users can import an animated character model, drape clothing over it, then export the result back to a 3D application in Alembic, FBX or USD format, as an OBJ file sequence, or as a Maya cache, PC2 or MDD cache.

New tools for painting folds into fabric, and ripping clothes apart along seams
New features in Marvelous Designer 2026.1 include a Brush Pinching option in the Pinching tool, making it possible to create folds and wrinkles in fabric by painting onto its surface freehand.

It is also now possible to temporarily override fabric simulation when using the Pinching tool, to control the form of the wrinkles more stably.

Another experimental new tool, the Seamline Rip tool, pulls a garment apart along stitching lines, automatically generating realistic fraying to the torn edges.

Record blendshape animations for 3D avatars
Other key changes include the option to record changes in blendshape values for the 3D avatar: for example, to keyframe blendshape-based facial animation, or corrective morphs.

Other feature, workflow and performance improvements
The 3D Pencil and Lacing tools introduced in Marvelous Designer 2026.0 both get smaller updates, and there are also updates to zipper placement and pattern mirroring workflows.

Quality of life improvements include new options to customize the position and visibility of tools in the 2D and 3D toolbars, and a Global Search feature in the Windows edition.

MacOS users get support for Metal-based GPU simulation, which should improve simulation performance on current Apple Silicon Macs.

Pipeline changes include the option to import and export camera data in FBX and glTF/GLB files, and the option to preserve the original UVs when importing OBJ files as garments.

Price and system requirements
Marvelous Designer 2026.1 is available rental-only for Windows 11, RHEL/Rocky Linux 9.5+ and macOS 14.0+.

Personal subscriptions for Windows and macOS cost $39/month or $280/year.

Enterprise subscriptions cost $199/month or $2,000/year for Windows and macOS, or $2,300/year including the new Linux edition of the software.

CLO Virtual Fashion also offers Indie subscriptions to studios with at least two staff and earnings under $500,000/year, but hasn’t publicly disclosed their cost.
