How to create facial blendshapes using photogrammetry

The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating Facial Blendshapes Using Photogrammetry, a new video tutorial recorded by Blur Studio Facial Modeler Adam Spring.

The workshop – a masterclass in scanning facial expressions and processing the scan data into blendshapes for use in a FACS-based facial rig – provides over four hours of video training in Lightroom, Metashape, Maya, ZBrush, Wrap and Photoshop.

Convert 3D scans of an actor into blendshapes for use in a FACS-based facial rig
In the tutorial, Spring reveals how to capture an actor’s facial expressions and process the scan data into blendshapes that can be used in a FACS-based facial animation rig.

He begins by capturing source photos using a DSLR camera, converting them into 3D scans in photogrammetry software Metashape.

Spring then cleans and wraps the raw scan data, using ZBrush to isolate different areas of the scans to create multiple blendshapes that can be imported into Maya.

Finally, he explores how to create a blendshape rig in Maya, creating a dynamic shader set-up in which expression texture maps are driven dynamically by individual facial shapes.

The workflow is suitable for use in either a games or visual effects pipeline.
