Download 85 free meshes of Australian trees and rocks

Epic Games has made Rural Australia, a set of scan-based environment assets captured on location in Australia by games artist Andrew Svanberg Hamilton, available free via the Unreal Engine marketplace.

It comprises 85 unique meshes, including rocks, rock walls, and native Australian trees, all optimised for real-time use, with LODs and simplified shaders.

The pack is separate to Epic’s usual free marketplace content for the month, and will be free indefinitely.

The assets in the Rural Australia pack were originally created for Memories of Australia, Svanberg Hamilton’s personal animation project inspired by his childhood in Australia.

The artist – based for the last 15 years in Sweden, where he is currently art director at Embark Studios – created them from photogrammetry scans captured on a recent visit to the country.

The pack comprises 85 unique meshes, including rocks, rock walls, logs and native trees.

According to Svanberg Hamilton, all of the content is “optimised towards” current game specs, with vertex counts ranging from 2,000 to 18,000 and up to five LODs, including billboards for the trees.

The pack also includes ground and water materials, plus a set of example maps including the country road and river canyon seen in the videos, plus a procedurally generated 1km x 1km environment.

System requirements and availability
The Rural Australia collection is available free via the Unreal Engine Marketplace. It is compatible with Unreal Engine 4.26+.

The marketplace usage rights permit assets not created by Epic Games itself to be exported to other game engines and DCC software, although obviously, some features require UE4 to work.
