Gnomon releases ‘The Fly’ Re-Imagined training DVD

The Gnomon Workshop has released a new training DVD exploring the character design process in detail. Creature Concepts: ‘The Fly’ Re-Imagined is recorded by Sony Pictures Animation and SCEA veteran Eric Ryan.

The tutorial, which runs to nearly three hours, explores the various tasks carried out by a character designer by reimagining the creature from David Cronenberg’s 1986 remake of The Fly.

From thumbnails to finished concept
Ryan’s initial conception phase involves generating numerous thumbnails in Photoshop, helping to eliminate redundant and stale designs in order not to rehash creature designs from the past.

He then moves onto the high-res painting in Photoshop, incorporating elements that help tie the creature to the character in the story as he works up a fully realised concept that could be pitched to a director.

Throughout the process, topics like character hybridisation, storytelling and various digital painting techniques are discussed in detail.

Eric Ryan has worked for studios including Sony Pictures Animation, Cinovation Studios and Sony Santa Monica, SCEA. His work can be seen in Men in Black 3, God of War: Ascension and various other game titles.

Creature Concepts: ‘The Fly’ Re-Imagined is available now on DVD or digital download, price $49.
