Tutorial: Concepting & Illustrating a Sword for Games

The Gnomon Workshop has released Concepting & Illustrating a Sword for Games, a guide to professional concept design techniques, recorded by NetEase Games’ Olivier Dubard.

The workshop, which is targeted at artists of all levels of experience, provides over 90 minutes of video training in ZBrush, Blender, OctaneRender and Photoshop.

Design and model a sword suitable for use in videogames or movies
In the workshop, Dubard sets out his creative process and technical workflow for designing story-driven fantasy props for videogames and films: in this case, a sword.

He begins by discussing how to create a compelling back story for the prop, and translate that story into unique visual elements.

Dubard then explores how to create striking thumbnail sketches, refine the designs, sculpt the sword in 3D in ZBrush, then render it professionally using OctaneRender.

About the artist
Olivier Dubard is Lead Concept Artist at NetEase Games.

He has over 10 years of experience in the industry, working with studios including Blizzard Entertainment, Microsoft and Sony, on projects ranging from AAA games to movies.

Pricing and availability
Concepting & Illustrating a Sword for Games is available via a subscription to The Gnomon Workshop, which provides access to over 300 tutorials.
