Adobe releases Substance 3D Sampler 4.3

Adobe has released Substance 3D Sampler 4.3, the latest version of its material authoring and 3D capture software for creating scan-based materials, HDRIs and 3D models.

The update adds a new set of Texture Generators for adding procedural noise to materials, a Perspective Crop tool for removing perspective artifacts from scans, and a new Stylization filter.

In separate news, the perpetual license for the software, previously available via Steam, has been discontinued, making Substance 3D Sampler available rental-only.

New Texture Generators add procedural noise to materials
The main new feature in Substance 3D Sampler 4.3 is a new asset type: Texture Generators.

Generators create procedural noise, and can be used in place of static images in channel maps or masks: for example, to add dirt to materials.

New Stylization and Perspective Crop filters, plus updates to the Embroidery and Fill filters
There are also two new filters: Stylization, for giving materials a hand-painted look, and Perspective Crop, for removing perspective artifacts from scans, to create a tileable texture.

The existing Embroidery filter has been updated to support up to eight stitching colors, and the Fill filter has been updated to support blending modes.

Workflow improvements and updates to stock materials
Workflow improvements include the option to generate an Opacity map from the alpha channel of an imported image.

In addition, the readymade materials included with the software have been updated to “better meet the needs of industrial design workflows, fashion workflows, and technical artists working in media and entertainment”.

Perpetual license removed from Steam
In separate news, Adobe has discontinued perpetual licenses of Substance 3D Sampler.

Perpetual licenses, which used to be available via Steam, and which cost $149.99, were discontinued on 1 January with Adobe announcing that it was “refocusing our Steam offering on our two flagship apps: Substance 3D Painter and Substance 3D Designer”.

Price and system requirements
Substance 3D Sampler 4.3 is available for Windows 10+, CentOS 7.0+/Ubuntu 20.04+ Linux and macOS 11.0+. The software is now subscription-only.

The Windows and macOS editions are available via Adobe’s Substance 3D Texturing subscriptions, for $19.99/month or $219.88/year; or Substance 3D Collection subscriptions, for $49.99/month or $549.88/year.

The Linux edition is available via Creative Cloud for Teams, priced at $1,199.88/year.
