Tutorial: Creating a Custom 3D Kit for Concept Art
The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating a Custom 3D Kit for Concept Art, a guide to creating 3D assets for concept art, recorded by Jose Vega and Tucker Roche, the founders of kitbash asset and reference image provider Absorb3D.
The workshop, for artists with intermediate-level Photoshop skills, provides over five hours of trainining, also covering Procreate, Gravity Sketch, Blender, ZBrush and Substance 3D Painter.
Create a library of custom 3D kibash assets, then use it to create concept art
In the workshop, Vega and Roche cover the process of creating a kit of 3D assets for use in concept art, then explore how to use it to build final illustrations.
They begin by developing the kit itself, exploring how to generate initial ideas, gather reference material and the initial prep work, before moving on to model and texture the assets.
Much of the work is done in Blender, with some additional sculpting in ZBrush, and VR design tool Gravity Sketch used to explore designs in virtual reality.
The individual assets are then developed into a complete asset library, employing Blender techniques such as the use of mirroring and deformers.
With the kit complete, Vega and Roche explore how to use it to create concept art, assembling a complete 3D scene, then using Photoshop painting techniques to refine the final image.
As well as the tutorial videos, viewers of the workshop can download a .blend file containing sample assets from a 3D medieval Asian town to use in their art work.
