Adobe releases Substance 3D Modeler 1.14
Substance 3D Modeler 1.14 updates painting workflow in the VR sculpting software, including the option to create decals with the Paint tool.
Adobe has released Substance 3D Modeler 1.14, the latest version of the VR sculpting tool.
The update reworks the software’s painting toolset, making it possible to paint decals with the Paint tool, and to paint while sculpting when using the surfacing tools.
Sculpt organic and hard-surface models in VR using a virtual clay workflow
Substance 3D Modeler is a SDF-based tool that lets users sculpt both organic and hard-surface models in virtual reality, or in desktop mode using a mouse and keyboard.
Workflow combines elements of sculpting and Boolean modelling, with users able to build up forms with virtual clay, then join or cut into them with Boolean operations.

Substance 3D Modeler 1.14: new painting workflow
Substance 3D Modeler 1.14 reworks the software’s painting capabilities, with the Paint tool now supporting textures as well as surface color, making it possible to create “simple decals”.
It is also now possible to paint while using the surfacing tools, with the Buildup, Raise and Inflate tools all getting a Color intensity slider.
A Color intensity value of 0% puts the tool in pure sculpting mode; higher values also apply surface color. Again, painting supports the use of textures.
In addition, the Smooth tool can now be set to smooth only the clay, or only surface colors.
Other workflow and UI updates
The update also reworks the layout of the controls when working in virtual reality to free up the Support trigger so that it can act like a modifier key.
According to Adobe, the change will make it possible to add more functionality to the VR controllers in future.
There are also a number of smaller UI, workflow and performance improvements, including scaling handles now resizing asymmetrically by default.
Price and system requirements
Substance 3D Modeler 1.14 is compatible with Windows 10+, and these VR headsets.
It is available via Substance 3D Collection subscriptions, which cost $49.99/month. At the time of writing, annual subscriptions are not available in Adobe’s online store.
Perpetual licences are available via Steam, and cost $149.99.
