Maxon has launched Maxon Studio, a new feature within its Red Giant product line for building motion graphics in After Effects by customizing readymade ‘Capsules’.
The Studio interface currently provides access to over 250 Capsules, each built from “dozens of Adobe and Red Giant tools and plugins”.
A new After Effects template engine available to Red Giant subscribers
Maxon describes Maxon Studio as being both an After Effects template engine and a UI for creating graphics – primarily 2D and 3D motion graphics – using that engine.
It is available as part of Maxon’s Red Giant subscriptions, which provide access to collections of plugins for creating VFX and motion graphics in After Effects and other compositing, grading and video editing software.
A beginner-friendly way to create motion graphics
Studio is aimed at artists of all skill levels, with a workflow based around customizing readymade ‘Capsules’ that provide animated backgrounds, text, transitions and effects.
The Capsules combine functionality from over 130 existing Red Giant tools, and may comprise “hundreds or even thousands” of parameters, although users “often only need a handful … for the most common adjustments, such as keyframing”.
Maxon’s marketing material rather pointedly distinguishes Capsules from standard After Effects templates, which are described as sometimes “hard to customize”.
Capsules are also responsive, so the layout of the graphics should adjust automatically to changes in the resolution of an After Effects project.
The Studio interface can be either run its own window, or docked inside After Effects.
Comes with over 250 Capsules at launch
At launch, Maxon Studio provides access to over 250 Capsules, created in partnership with artist collective CandyMustache.
New Capsules will be “added routinely over time”.
Updated 18 July 2024: Maxon has released Maxon Studio 2024.1, the first update to the product since its launch.
The update makes it possible to create After Effects compositions directly from Maxon Studio, and to make the color values used in the UI more similar to standard hex codes.
Price and system requirements
Maxon Studio is available via Red Giant subscriptions, which cost $79/month or $599/year, or Maxon One subscriptions, which cost $149/month or $1,199/year.
The Red Giant plugins are available for Windows 10+ and macOS 12.0+, and are compatible with After Effects 2023+.
