Boris FX releases SynthEyes 2024.5
Boris FX has released SynthEyes 2024.5, the latest version of the 3D tracking software.
The release streamlines export of data to 3D, rotoscoping and compositing applications including Blender and Silhouette – and in particular, to Flame.
A powerful, affordable 3D object and camera tracking application
First released two decades ago, and acquired by Boris FX in 2023, SynthEyes became adopted in VFX pipelines for its combination of speed, accuracy and affordability.
The standalone 3D tracking application enables artists to perform 3D set extensions, place CG characters into scenes, and animate them using motion capture.
It can handle a wide range of shot types, including stereoscopic and 360-degree virtual reality, and exports to most major 3D and compositing applications.
SynthEyes 2024.5: revamped Flame exporter
SynthEyes 2024.5 revamps the software’s Flame exporter, streamlining the process of exchanging data with Autodesk’s compositing and finishing software.
The videos above show the workflow for transferring tracking and lens distortion data.
Transferring data from SynthEyes to Flame automatically creates an Action node and loads all of the data required; and the Export Again command in SynthEyes and Receive from SynthEyes command in Flame make updating shots a two-click process.
The workflow requires Flame 2025.0.1, the latest version of the software.
Updates to the Blender and Silhouette exporters
SynthEyes’ Blender exporter has also been updated, although the only specific change listed in the release notes is support for Blender 4.0.
The exporter for Silhouette, Boris FX’s roto and paint software, now supports distortion prediction and tracker colors.
New mesh resizing rectangle tool for adjusting cards
The update also introduces new mesh resizing rectangle tool in the perspective view, which repositions any edge in local co-ordinates.
Boris FX describes it as a quick way to adjust cards.
Other changes include the option to load focal length metadata direct from shot data, and a new Decimate Distortion Keys script for per-frame lens distortion data.
You can find a full list of changes and of the updates to the camera RAW formats that SynthEyes supports in the online release notes.
Pricing and availability
SynthEyes 2024.5 is available for Windows 10+, RHEL/CentOS 7+ Linux and macOS 10.15+. New perpetual licenses cost $595. Subscriptions cost $49/month or $295/year.
