Tutorial: Creating Key Illustrations for Videogames

The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating Key Illustrations for Videogames, a guide to creating key concept art for games, recorded by Ubisoft Senior Art Director Eddie Bennun.

The tutorial, which is intended to be accessible to artists of all levels of experience, provides just under three hours of video training in SketchUp and Photoshop.

Discover how to create professional-quality illustrations for games
Games concept artists are tasked with designing memorable, visually vibrant game universes.

In the workshop, Bennun sets out the principles of creating key concept art for an imaginary open-world game, combining historical detail with fictional settings to create a fantastical world that borders on the real.

The tutorial covers both 2D and 3D techniques, with Bennun using simple 3D assets created in SketchUp to block out the scene, before using a more painterly workflow to create illustrations from it: both a black-and-white image and a fully polished high-resolution final illustration.

As well as concept designers, the workshop is intended for artists looking to create marketing images for games.

About the artist
Eddie Bennun is Senior Art Director at Ubisoft Sofia, having begun his career in the games at Gameloft. He has two decades of experience as an art director, concept artist and illustrator.
