Tutorial: VFX for Games

The Gnomon Workshop has released VFX for Games: Creating a Fantasy Scene, a guide to real-time VFX in Unreal Engine, recorded by artist Keagan Williams.

The workshop provides 170 minutes of training for beginner-to-intermediate-level artists, primarily in Houdini and Unreal Engine, but also covers Character Creator, the Mixamo animation library and Photoshop.

Create real-time fantasy-style effects in Houdini and Unreal Engine
In the workshop, Williams sets out the techniques he uses in his own professional work, demonstrating how to create a real-time VFX portfolio piece that goes beyond basic particle systems.

Topics covered include KineFX, Houdini’s new rigging and animation framework, its Vellum simulation system, and stylised hair, lighting and Blueprints in Unreal Engine.

As well as the training videos themselves, viewers of the workshop can download supporting project files for “almost everything” seen in the tutorial.

About the artist
