Tutorial: Stylized Environment Creation for Games
The Gnomon Workshop has released Stylized Environment Creation for Games, a beginner’s guide to environment workflows, recorded by Retro Studios senior environment artist Rodrigo Brea.
The workshop provides over five hours of video training in a range of industry-standard software, including Unreal Engine, Blender, ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter and Photoshop.

In the workshop, Brea sets out a range of approaches for building stylised environments.
The tutorial sets out how to model and texture a range of environment assets, including grass and trees, and how to set up a reusable Substance Smart Material.
Other topics covered include how to analyse a concept for an environment, how to set up a basic scene in Unreal Engine 5, and how to light the assets and render out images and videos for review.
The videos also cover free tree generator Tree It and Autodesk’s free FBX Converter.
Viewers of the workshop can download supporting project files for all of the software used, and Brea’s completed Unreal Engine 5 project, including all of the final assets.

Rodrigo Brea is a senior environment artist at Nintendo subsidiary Retro Studios.
He has worked in game development for over five years, for studios including Survios and Amazon Games, across a range of art styles and on platforms including PC, consoles and VR.
