Tutorial: Designing Mechs in VR Using Medium

The Gnomon Workshop has released Designing Mechs in VR Using Medium, a guide to creating hard-surface mech designs inside virtual reality, recorded by concept artist Andre-Lang Huynh.

It provides three and a half hours of video training in Medium, Meta’s free VR sculpting software, and Luxion’s KeyShot renderer.

Master the VR-based concept design workflow used on Gotham Knights
In the workshop, Huynh sets out the virtual reality workflow he used to design characters, vehicles and weapons for open-world action RPG Gotham Knights.

He blocks out and refines the mech in Medium, demonstrating the flexibility of sculpting in VR and the precision that can be achieved using simple tools, before rendering the final design in KeyShot.

As well as the tutorial videos themselves, viewers of the workshop can download supporting project files, including Andre’s brush and kitbash packs, Medium scene file and KeyShot materials.

About the artist
Andre-Lang Huynh is senior concept artist at WB Games Montréal, where he has designed characters, props and vehicles for the Gotham Knights game, including the Batmobile, Batcycle and Mr. Freeze.

Known online as MechNuggets, he has developed a VR workflow that combines the flexibility of traditional sketching with the power of 3D.
