Tutorial: Professional Character Design for Film

The Gnomon Workshop has released Professional Character Design For Film, a guide to the character design workflow of leading concept artist Ehsan Bigloo.

The workshop provides over three and a half hours of video training, covering traditional drawing, plus ZBrush for digital sculpting, and KeyShot and Unreal Engine for rendering.

A complete guide to creature design for studio artists and IP developers
In the workshop, Bigloo sets out his own production-proven workflow for designing creatures for visual effects projects, showing the complete process for designing Div, a humanoid demon character.

He begins by sketching ideas in pencil on paper, discussing how he finds shapes and forms for a character.

Bigloo translates his initial 2D concept into 3D in ZBrush, before generating a final render in KeyShot. A bonus chapter explores the creative possibilities of importing the character into Unreal Engine for lighting.

As well as aspiring creature designers and digital sculptors, the workshop should provide valuable insights for more experienced artists hoping to develop their own visual IP.

About the artist
Ehsan Bigloo is a freelance concept artist and visual IP developer. He is a two-time finalist in the creature design categories of the Concept Art Association awards.

His movie and TV credits include the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, while his game credits include work for BioWare, Wizards of the Coast and Riot Games.
