Maxon releases Cinema 4D 2026.4 with a new MCP Server
Maxon has released Cinema 4D 2026.4, the latest version of its 3D software for motion graphics, VFX and visualization work.
The update adds a new MCP Server, making it possible to connect the software to external AI tools like Claude or ChatGPT: for example, to automate routine tasks.

The update makes Cinema 4D the latest DCC tool to incorporate an official MCP (Model Context Protocol) Server, used to expose the functionality of an application to external AI tools.
That makes it possible to use a LLM – the Cinema 4D MCP Server officially supports Claude Desktop and ChatGPT Desktop – to control the software using natural-language prompts.
Maxon pitches it as a way to tackle “procedural, iterative, and repetitive work, helping reduce more tedious task-based work without interrupting creative flow”.
Suggested use cases include changing the hierarchy or naming conventions of a scene, managing multi-pass renders, and setting up camera tracking.
However, it is also possible to control “basic” 3D modelling and UV editing tasks; to rig and animate characters; and to create particle and liquid simulations.
You can find a list of actions that can be controlled via the MCP Server in the online documentation, although it is possible to tackle more complex tasks by using Python scripts.
Capable of relatively complex tasks, but ‘not a generative system’
That makes it possible to use the MCP Server for quite complex workflows.
The image above shows a complete 3D environment assembled inside Cinema 4D from readymade assets through an “interactive conversation with an AI agent”.
However, in its online documentation, Maxon is quick to reassure its historically AI-sceptical user base that the the MCP connection is not a generative system.
“It does not invent designs, it does not produce imagery, and it holds no opinion about whether a shot works. It has no taste. Every instruction originates with you, every action it takes appears in the undo stack, and nothing happens at all while the MCP server is switched off.”
Can run entirely locally, and turned off by default
The MCP Server runs locally on an artist’s machine, with separate opt-in required to work with other machines on a local network, and is turned off by default.
Although it’s probably most practical to use with cloud-based AI services, it can be used with apps that run AI models locally, like LM Studio, although GPU memory may be an issue.
The Server runs only in the full version of Cinema 4D, so it isn’t available in the Lite edition available in After Effects, or when using Team Render or command-line rendering.
The latest DCC application to integrate a MCP Server
The change brings Cinema 4D in line with applications like DaVinci Resolve and Unreal Engine, both of which integrated MCP Servers this year.
Blender has an official MCP Server, although as an add-on, rather than part of the core software; and Houdini has a tech preview of one, in the shape of Houdini 22’s Apex Script comfort package.
Price, system requirements and release date
Cinema 4D 2026.4 is compatible with Windows 10+ and macOS 14.0+. It is available rental-only, with Cinema 4D subscriptions costing $109/month or $839/year.
