Boris FX releases SynthEyes 2025.5

Boris FX has released SynthEyes 2025.5, the latest version of the 3D tracking software.

New features include ML Motion Estimation, a new AI-based mode for auto-tracking; the option to parent meshes directly to individual trackers; and more flexible handling of lens undistortion.

The price of perpetual licenses and subscriptions has risen since the previous release.

A powerful, affordable 3D object and camera tracking application
First released two decades ago, and acquired by Boris FX in 2023, SynthEyes is a standalone 3D tracking app, used in VFX pipelines for its combination of speed, accuracy and affordability.

It can handle a wide range of shot types, including stereoscopic and 360-degree virtual reality, and exports to most major 3D and compositing applications.

SynthEyes 2025.5: new AI-based motion estimation system
The headline change in SynthEyes 2025.5 is ML Motion Estimation.

Available as a new mode for automatic tracking, it uses machine learning to estimate the optical flow of pixels between frames.

Boris FX describes it as an alternative to manually supervised tracking in cases where traditional auto-tracking fails.

Suggested use cases include tracking smooth surfaces like walls, shots with rapid motion, those with low contrast or lighting changes, and shots with occlusion.

More controls for the existing Mask ML system
In addition, the Mask ML system added in SynthEyes 2025.0 for automatically generating masks for people or objects in a shot gets a new Dilation control.

It enables users to expand the edges of the masks generated, to improve results on parts of objects with soft edges, such as long hair or edges with motion blur.

Parent meshes to trackers directly
Outside the new AI tools, new features in SynthEyes 2025.5 include Parent Mesh to Tracker.

It enables meshes to be parented directly to individual trackers, either directly in the Hierarchy View, or via the context menu in the Perspective View.

Meshes retain their alignment during re-solves and export, reducing the manual input needed.

Temporarily remove lens undistortion during export
It is also now possible to temporarily remove lens undistortion during export.

The option is intended to simplify iterative workflows that involve other software, making it possible to export solves that match the original footage.

Other improvements include automatic orientation handling on video files with rotation metadata (TIFF, PNG, JPEG, ProRes), a dedicated LUTs folder, and support for the Blackmagic Ursa Cine 17K 65.

Price up since SynthEyes 2025
Boris FX has also raised the price of SynthEyes since the previous release.

The price of perpetual licenses has risen by $60, to $655.

The price of subscriptions has risen by $13/month, to $62/month, and by $30/year, to $325/year.

Price and system requirements
SynthEyes 2025.5 is available for Windows 10+, CentOS 7+ Linux or a compatible distro, and macOS 12.0+. New perpetual licenses cost $655. Subscriptions cost $62/month or $325/year.
