Check out Framestore’s explosive VFX breakdown for War Machine
Framestore has posted its VFX breakdown for old-school sci-fi action movie War Machine.
The firm’s Melbourne and Mumbai studios delivered 252 VFX shots, including CG terrain, effects ranging from laser and plasma fire to explosions – and of course, the War Machine itself.
Framestore has a great case study on the design of the otherworldly killing machine, from which it deliberately removed human-made details like panels and hinges early in production.
Instead, the studio treated the War Machine more like an organic character, looking to dinosaurs and other bipedal predators for inspiration in the animation.
Framestore took the resulting character through several key sequences, including the intense ‘Guardian Chase’, an extended ‘oner’, and the climactic sequence in which the nameless protagonist battles the War Machine in a quarry using heavy construction machinery.
