See Framestore’s VFX breakdown for period drama East of Eden

Framestore has posted its VFX breakdown for Netflix period drama East of Eden, based on the novel by John Steinbeck.

Framestore’s core challenge was to recreate turn-of-the-20th-century California, with the studio building extensive CG environments to integrate with the practical locations.

The breakdown follows several of those environments – individual houses, Brothel Row, and San Francisco’s Chinatown – from initial production references to final rendered effects.

Framestore also contributed supporting effects – some dramatic, like the fire that consumes the Ames House across four shots; others more subtle, like an animated deer reacting to a hunter’s rifle blast, blood effects, muzzle flashes, wig and prosthetic clean-up, and invisible fixes.
