JangaFX just made effects tool VectorayGen available free
The original 2018 demo video for VectorayGen. JangaFX has just made the software, which generates 3D vector fields to control particle simulations for games and VFX, available for free.
Real-time effects tools developer JangaFX has made its very first application, vector field generator VectorayGen, available to download for free.
The GPU-accelerated tool makes it possible to create vector fields to control particle simulations for games, motion graphics and VFX, using a node-based workflow.
Generate 3D vector fields in FGA format to control particle effects in Unreal Engine
Originally released in 2017, VectorayGen was JangaFX’s first software product, preceding its real-time effects tools like smoke and fire simulator EmberGen and liquid simulator LiquiGen.
It’s a much more specialist tool, used for generating vector fields: 3D grids of velocities that can be used to control the motion of particles in particle effects simulations.
Artists can import 3D objects, compute particle flows around them, and add noise and turbulence, using a node-based workflow, with updates shown in real time in a 3D viewport.
The results can be exported in FGA format for use in Unreal Engine and real-time FX tools like PopcornFX, as the basis for fire, energy or magical effects.
I've been following Louis Rossmann for a while and am continually impressed and inspired with his views on business, selling products, and so on. He's brought up numerous times how companies will kill a software but remove access to said software, even if the users "own" it. In… pic.twitter.com/vyHVsTC7Qf

Righting a ‘mistake’ of the past
JangaFX actually removed VectorayGen from its website a couple of years ago as sales of its newer applications took off, so the story of its rebirth is an interesting one.
Earlier this year, the company tweeted that it had been following right to repair campaigner Louis Rossman, and had been struck by his views on how companies often unnecessarily ‘kill’ applications by removing access to them when active development ends.
“It seemed smart at the time to just sweep our first-born software under the rug, but in hindsight, if we follow Louis’s belief system, [removing the download] was a shitty move.
“What sucks for artists who did enjoy the tool is it was the only real and easy way to generate vector fields for games, and this is still the case to this day.
“Within the next month or two we’ll recompile VectorayGen, rip out the licensing and put it up on our website, as is, free of charge [on] the off chance someone needs a vector field.”
No longer being updated, but available free in perpetuity
JangaFX has now made good on that promise, and made VectorayGen available to download again, minus license checks, “as is, for free, for eternity”.
The software won’t be getting an future updates, so the current release, VectorayGen 1.04, will be the last, but it supports Windows 11, so it should have a few years left in it yet.
JangaFX also plans to add the ability to generate vector fields in a future update to IlluGen, its new tool for creating VFX assets for games, “to carry forward the vector field torch”.
Price and system requirements
VectorayGen is compatible with Windows 10+. It supports AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. The final release, VectorayGen 1.04, is a free download.
