Tutorial: Creating Efficient Digital Doubles for VFX

The Gnomon Workshop has released Creating Efficient Digital Doubles for VFX, a complete guide to creating digi doubles, recorded by VFX artist Pat Imrie.

The workshop provides three hours of video training in Maya, ZBrush and Faceform’s Wrap.

Master the industry-standard workflow for creating digi doubles for visual effects projects
In the workshop, which is suitable for artists with no experience of creating digi doubles, Imrie explains how to do so quickly and efficiently, following an industry-standard worfklow.

Using scan data from Clear Angle Studios, he begins by explaining how to prepare the raw data to create an asset that can be used at multiple levels of detail.

He then discusses how to use Wrap to match the base mesh to the scan data, before exploring techniques that can be used to quickly replicate the clothing using Maya and ZBrush.

Imrie also reveals how to build a basic rig to help repose the digi double, and how to project and test texture maps to ensure the asset is ready to pass on to other departments in a studio.

As well as the tutorial videos, viewers of the workshop can download the basic mesh topology used in the workshop, in OBJ and FBX format.
