Tutorial: Concepting Spaceships for Film & Games

The Gnomon Workshop has released Concepting Spaceships for Film & Games, a guide to hard-surface design recorded by concept artist Joe Gloria.

The workshop, which is intended for artists of all levels of experience, provides a 100-minute overview of Gloria’s workflow in applications including 3DCoat, ZBrush, KeyShot and Photoshop.

A beginner-friendly guide to creating 3D concept designs for sci-fi vehicles
In the workshop, Gloria sets out his workflow for creating concepts for sci-fi vehicles for use in production in games or visual effects projects.

He uses 3DCoat to block out shapes, before taking the design into ZBrush for more detailed hard-surface modeling work, exploring how to create designs that can be viewed from all angles.

As well as how to take a concept from initial ideas to final turntable render, the workshop covers the importance of form, balance and curves, and how colour choices affect designs.

As well as the tutorial videos themselves, viewers of the workshop can download Gloria’s 3DCoat, ZBrush, KeyShot and Photoshop project files.

About the artist
Joe Gloria is principal concept designer at game developer Build A Rocket Boy.

He has over a decade of experience in the industry, at studios including Ubisoft Paris, and currently specialises in creating hard-surface designs.
