Sony Pictures Imageworks used an Unreal Engine-based pipeline for Love, Death + Robots episode In Vaulted Halls Entombed: one of the case studies in the Animation Field Guide, Epic Games’ new free e-book.
Epic Games has released The Animation Field Guide, a free downloadable 120-page e-book on real-time production, including case studies on the work of Sony Pictures Imageworks and DNEG Animation.
An interesting series of interviews with animation studios using Unreal Engine-based pipelines
Following on from Epic Games’ recent free games art e-book, The Animation Field Guide explores the use of its technology in production: this time, in broadcast and feature animation.
Although it provides an overview of the differences between real-time production using Unreal Engine and a traditional offline rendering pipeline, the guts of the content is a series of interviews with Unreal users.
They range from individual animators to large studios like Sony Pictures Imageworks, which used an Unreal Engine-based pipeline on In Vaulted Halls Entombed, its recent episode of Love, Death + Robots.
Most of the case studies cover episodic animation, but there are also interviews with artists working on game cinematics and Pakistani animated feature Allahyar and the 100 Flowers of God.
