Download Unity’s free Digital Human Package

Unity is to update the Digital Human Package, its free library of experimental features for animating and rendering photorealistic digital humans inside the Unity game engine.

The Q3 2022 update adds features developed for Unity’s Enemies tech demo, including GPU-accelerated skin deformation and the option to apply wrinkle maps automatically based on skin tension.

A library of experimental technologies for creating photorealistic digital humans in Unity
Originally released in 2020, the Digital Human Package showcases experimental character technologies developed for Unity’s The Heretic tech demo.

It includes the facial animation system, skin attachment system, and skin, eye, teeth and hair shader graphs used for the lead character in the seven-minute animated short.

Updated with features developed for Unity’s Enemies tech demo
To that, the Q3 2022 update adds features developed for Unity’s Enemies tech demo earlier this year, including GPU paths for skin attachment and skin deformation.

Other changes include the option to trigger wrinkle maps based on skin tension, a custom pass for slight blurring around a character’s eyelids, and updated shader graphs for eyes and skin.

The update was announced yesterday during the keynote at Unite 2022, Unity’s user event.

System requirements and licence conditions
The Unity Digital Human Package is compatible with Unity 2020.3+. The GPU path for skin attachment and skin deformation requires Unity 2021.2+ and the new skin and eye shaders required Unity 2022.2.0a16+.

Another key experimental technology from the Enemies demo, the strand-based hair system, is also available to download, and is compatible with Unity 2020.2.0f1+.

The packages are available under the Unity Companion License, which permits commercial use.
