Epic Games’ free Live Link Face app is now available for Android

Epic Games has made Live Link Face, its free app for transferring facial performances from footage of a live actor to a 3D character in Unreal Engine, available for Android as well as iOS.

Both the iOS edition and the new Android edition, which is still officially in beta, are now capable of streaming facial animation data to a MetaHuman character in real time.

A facial capture app aimed at large virtual productions as well as individual animators
Live Link Face transfers facial animation data from video footage of live actor captured on a mobile phone or tablet to a 3D character inside Unreal Engine.

Although it isn’t the only free facial capture app – Rokoko and Maxon both have their own free apps – it is one of the most fully featured, with functionality aimed both at online streamers, individual animators looking to capture facial reference data, and at big virtual productions.

You can read more about its functionality on this story on the original release.

Now capable of streaming animation data to a MetaHuman character in real time
Since the initial release in 2020, Epic Games has updated Live Link Face regularly, adding support for iPads as well as iPhones, and for Unreal Engine 5.

Version 1.3, released in 2023, added support for MetaHuman Animator, Epic’s toolset for transferring facial performances to MetaHuman characters.

To that, the latest release – for the iOS edition, it’s version 1.5 – makes it possible to stream facial animation to a MetaHuman in real time.

MetaHuman Animator itself has also been updated, with the latest version supporting footage from mono cameras, such as those in many Android phones.

As a result, the Live Link Face app is now available for Android: currently, you need a device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor or later for real-time animation workflows.

Price and system requirements
For Apple devices, Live Link Face 1.5 is available for iOS 16.0+ and iPadOS 16.0+. The new Android edition is compatible with Android 12+. It is currently still in beta. Both editions are free.

You can find current pricing details for Unreal Engine itself in this story.
