3ds Max Indie and Maya Indie now available in Latin America

Autodesk has made 3ds Max Indie and Maya Indie, its reduced-price subscriptions to 3ds Max and Maya, available to users throughout Latin America, not just Brazil and Mexico.

The $280/year subscriptions, which provide access to the full versions of the software for use in commercial projects, are now available to artists in Latin America earning under $50,000/year from creative work.

Indie subscriptions are also available to artists throughout North America, where the earnings limit is $100,000/year, and Europe – now including the whole of mainland Europe – plus selected countries in Asia.

Use the full version of 3ds Max or Maya for $280/year
Launched in 2019, 3ds Max Indie and Maya Indie provide users with a gross annual revenue from design work under an earnings threshold with a single licence of the full version of the software.

The exact price varies from country to country, but is currently $280/year for the US.

The program was initially only available in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the US, but in 2020, Autodesk extended the program to over 40 countries worldwide, including Asia and mainland Europe.

Now available throughout the whole of Latin America
That list has now been broadened to include the whole of Latin America, not just Brazil and Mexico, with indie subscriptions available via Autodesk’s continent-wide online store.

At $280/year, the cost is the same as for artists in the US, but the earnings threshold is halved: you can only take out an indie subscription if your gross earnings from creative work are under USD $50,000/year.

In addition, there is now separate local pricing for artists in Argentina, Chile and Colombia. Again, the earnings threshold for eligibility is $50,000/year.

We aren’t sure exactly when the change was made – we spotted it when CGPress ran a story last week – but a search of Wayback Machine indicates that it’s happened since the end of January 2021.

Indie subscriptions also now available in the remaining countries in Europe
Although users in most major European countries were already eligible for indie subscriptions, Autodesk has also now made them available via a general ‘Other European Countries’ online store.

That makes them accessible in the remaining countries of mainland Europe, including Cyprus.

At €350.90/year, subscriptions taken out through the general European store are priced similarly to those in Autodesk’s online stores for individual European countries, like France and Italy.

However, the earnings threshold is lower: €50,000/year as opposed to €100,000/year.

In which countries are 3ds Max Indie and Maya Indie subscriptions available?
That makes indie subscriptions to 3ds Max and Maya available in the following countries:

Asia-Pacific
Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore

Europe and the Middle East
All of Europe (via continent-wide and country-specific stores), Turkey

South and Central America
All of Latin America (via continent-wide and country-specific stores)

North America
Canada, US

The real absence from the list is Africa: at the time of writing, indie subscriptions are not available in any country on the continent, including South Africa.

Details vary from country to country and even between 3ds Max and Maya – Autodesk currently includes more individual European countries on its list of places eligible for 3ds Max Indie subscriptions than it does for Maya Indie subscriptions – so for an up-to-date picture, follow the links below.

Pricing and system requirements
3ds Max is available for Windows 10. Maya is available for Windows 10, RHEL/CentOS 7.6-7.9 or 8.2 Linux and macOS 10.13+

Indie subscriptions for both apps are available on a rental-only basis to users in eligible countries with gross income from creative work under a local earnings threshold, for use on projects valued at under $100,000.

The earnings threshold and the exact price of an indie subscription varies from country to country, as discussed in the story above. Indie subscriptions are limited to one licence per user or organisation.
