Come to an evening with ILM’s Grzegorz Jonkajtys
The Gnomon School of Visual Effects has announced An Evening with Grzegorz Jonkajtys: a free two-hour event in which the multi-award-winning animator will explain his mixed-media workflow.
From Star Wars to stop-motion
By day a senior animator at ILM, where he has worked on movies including Rango, Pacific Rim and Star Wars: Episode VII, Greg Jonkajtys is also one of the world’s leading independent animators.
His first short, Mantis, won a BAF award, and its follow-up, ARK, won the Siggraph Electronic Theater Best of Show award and was nominated for the Palme d’Or in the Cannes Film Festival.
ARK used an intriguing mix of live-action, miniature backgrounds and CG characters: a workflow Jonkajtys will be demonstrating in his Gnomon talk, which focuses on his four-minute test short for Teddy Floppy-Ear (above).
Created in 1957 by writer Czesław Janczarski, the teddy bear became the star of a series of kids’ books – and in the 1970s, a popular Polish stop-motion animated TV series, still broadcast in Europe today.
Jonkajtys is currently developing a movie based on the character.
In his presentation, Jonkajtys will screen video from live-action shoots, provide behind-the-scenes insights and discuss his techniques. Viewers can ask questions either live, or via Twitter.
Free to attend, but register online in advance
An Evening with Grzegorz Jonkajtys takes place at Gnomon’s Hollywood campus from 6-8pm PDT on Saturday 19 March 2016. The event is free to attend, but you’ll need to register online in advance.
