Gnomon releases Figure Fundamentals Volume 1

The Gnomon Workshop has released Figure Fundamentals Volume 1: Construction for Proportion and Gesture, a new training course in traditional figure drawing recorded by Los Angeles-based painter Van Arno.

Gnomon describes the tutorial, which covers key skills for storyboard and concept artists, illustrators and animators, as “a boot camp for beginners [and] a valuable refresher for experienced artists”.

Capture the essentials of a pose to create strong, dynamic drawings
In the video, which runs for just under three hours, Van Arno explores the fundamentals of human anatomy and drawing methodology, as well as specific topics like foreshortening and light and shadow.

The tutorial aims to make artists conscious of the proportions and gesture of a figure from the first stroke of the pencil, rapidly capturing the essentials of the pose without being distracted by unnecessary detail.

About the artist
Van Arno is a figurative painter whose work has been displayed internationally for almost 20 years. His paintings have frequently been featured in Juxtapoz magazine and included in a national survey of Lowbrow painters.

His background also includes illustration, amusement park design, game art in 2D and 3D, animation and character design.
