Amplify: cool new virtual texturing add-on for Unity

New indie developer Insidious Technologies has released a virtual texturing add-on for Unity Pro.

According to Insidious, Amplify enables level artists to use large volumes of texture data without worrying about memory limits or streaming, supporting virtual textures up to 512,000 x 512,000 pixels in size.

Virtual texturing works by slicing large textures – potentially larger than can fit into memory – into smaller tiles. At runtime, only tiles visible to the camera are streamed from disk. You can read more about it here and here.

The add-on supports per-material textures over 4,000 x 4,000 pixels in size, including diffuse, normal and glossiness maps. It is available for Windows and Mac OS X.

Amplify costs $99 for an indie developer site licence and $349 for a Pro site licence. A free trial edition is also available, supporting virtual textures up to 32,000 x 32,000 pixels in size.
